CHANGES IN OUR
NEIGHBORHOOD
Clean Energy Meeting
For those unable to attend the Chicago Clean Energy Public Meeting that was held on August 24, 2011, here is a brief summary about the benefits of the Chicago Clean Energy Project, a $3 billion investment for our Southeast Side neighborhoods:
Economic Growth: Chicago Clean Energy represents a $3 billion investment into a community that has seen decades of disinvestment. It will generate thousands of jobs, spur growth in local business and bring over a billion dollars of additional tax revenue to state and local governments.
Consumer Savings: This project will save consumers money on their gas bills. By making clean substitute natural gas at a stable price, Chicago Clean Energy will save consumers at least $100 million and probably more than
$1 billion over the first 30 years of operations.
Green Technology: This safe, proven technology will position Illinois at the forefront of the clean energy industry needed to protect our environment and power our quality of life.

US Steel South Works
Site Redevelopment
A thirty year development plan estimated to cost $4 billion dollars was approved by the city in September 2010, for the former site of the huge steel mill, which operated along the neighborhood's shoreline from 1880 to 1992. The site has undergone extensive demolition and environmental remediation since 1992. The plan calls for extension of Lake Shore Drive, with site construction to begin in 2012.
