Knowledge Hook-Up volunteers at fishing rodeo
Thanks to the NWTF's Wheelin' Sportsmen program, Chicagoans with disabilities got to
fish for free
June 19th, at the William W. Powers State Recreation Area during Wheelin'
Sportsmen's
Chicagoland Fishing Rodeo. Wheelin' Sportsmen NWTF, the Illinois
Conservation Foundation and
the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, partnered to
host the event, providing sportsmen and
women with disabilities a chance to wet their
lines in the recreation area's beautiful 419-acre Wolf
Lake.
The Chicagoland Fishing
Rodeo is just one of many Wheelin' events across the country that
works to get people
with disabilities outside and engaged in outdoor activities. The lake's six miles
of
shoreline gave anglers ample opportunity to cast a line and reel in catfish, bass,
bluegill, muskie,
northern pike or walleye. The William W. Powers State Recreation
Area has wheelchair accessible
fishing areas and restrooms. A light lunch was
provided for participants and all fishing equipment
was furnished. Over 500 people,
including KHU volunteers participated in the event.

KHU Block Club News
Our participants have started a Block Club using
Knowledge Hook-Up as a meeting place to
produce a monthly newsletter that is distributed
throughout the neighborhood.
This newsletter
includes information gathered from available
websites (i.e. local crime reports, police reports,
school information blogs, City sites, etc.), CAPS
and other community meetings, safety issues,
neighborhood block conditions, and manageable
improvements that might be accomplished by
our working together to decrease the violence,
crime, and gang activity that now surrounds us.
In partnership with The Claretian Associates,
the Block Club has increased involvement in
civic activities while developing a spirit of
cooperation and social interaction to help
improve the safety of our neighborhood.
Meet your neighbors at the Block Party
August 1st.

KHU and Friends of the Parks
Last Four Miles initiative
Currently 26 miles of Chicago’s 30 mile long
lakefront are accessible. The Friends of the
Parks “Last Four Miles” initiative is a proposal
to
complete public access to Chicago’s entire
lakefront. The south side portions are from 71st
to 75th Streets, the US Steel site, the Confined
Disposal Facility (CDF), and the unused portion
of the Iroquois Landing Facility. A display
summarizing the plan is available for viewing at
Calumet Park and at the East Side Vodak
Library. On Thursday, June 18, 2009 6:30pm
to
9:00pm The Calumet Ecological Park
Association
hosted a special evening of
presentations to
celebrate the Burnham Plan
Centennial.
Presentations focused on different
aspects of
planning for Calumet from the past
through the
present and into the future. For more
information
about the Burnham Plan Centennial,
please visit http://burnhamplan100.uchicago.edu/

the online exhibit.
