NEWS AND EVENTS
KHU+O-H+SECCIR+IPL=ESL+GED+CW
What are all these acronyms about?
It all began this past November when six community leaders
met
with Patty Fisher, KHU founder, at Knowledge Hook-Up to
discuss immigration and citizenship classes for our neighborhood.
Irma Saldana and Francisco Torres from Olive-Harvey College
(O-H), along with Ana Guajardo and Olga Bautista from SECCIR,
spoke about the
preparation for the classes and how Olive-Harvey
is working with
KHU. The second ESL Class is currently being
held
at KHU and
we will be starting our first GED Class later this month.
Theresa Du Bois from Family Rescue gave information on
their organization and how they are working to break the cycle of
domestic violence and wanted KHU to have cards to pass out with
the 24-Hour Crisis Hot Line Numbers: 800-360-6619 or
773-375-8400.
Tom DuBois from IPL mentioned different work
programs that are
available in Spanish.
Everyone was on the same page regarding informing our
community of the resources available to them and the free
education available in the neighborhood. It was decided that it
would be best to work as a consortium and not stand alone. Our
network (Community Weaving is one of the terms used for this)
would have a better chance of being heard as a collective. Also,
if we are seeking funding, it helps to work as a group, showing
solidarity in the goal to help our community get the education they
need to succeed.
