Knowledge Hook-Up teaches parent classes at
Gallistel Language Academy
On March 1, Knowledge Hook-Up began Basic Computer Literacy classes for
the parents at
nearby Gallistel Language Academy. This 6-week session
teaches parents who have never
used a computer before. The lessons include
keyboard usage, computer terminology, setting
up an e-mail account,
Internet safety as well as Microsoft Windows, Word, and Excel. Over
300
parents have been on a waiting list for over two years at Gallistel and
Jane Addams schools.
As the Chicago Public Schools prepare to begin
communicating with parents via e-mail, these
parents are very anxious to
pick up these skills. Arrangements are being made to begin a class
at Jane
Addams soon in addition to the two sessions currently scheduled at
Gallistel.
The present class has 24 participants sharing 7 laptops provided by KHU
and 5 of the school’s
computers. An instructor and two volunteers from a
previous class held at KHU, teach the class
for 2 hours each week in a
classroom at Gallistel.
