Knowledge Hook-Up Celebrates Anniversary
On September 21, 2007 Knowledge Hook-Up held their First Anniversary Party
which was attended by over 300 people.
Appreciation awards were presented
by Patty Fisher, founder of KHU, to the many sponsors, friends, and students
who had helped Knowledge
Hook-Up
to successfully train over 500 students to use a computer this past year.
Day of the Dead Celebrated Throughout November at Knowledge Hook-Up
The Day of the Dead celebration is an ancient festivity that has been much
transformed through the years, but which was intended in
prehispanic
Mexico to celebrate children and the dead. Hence, the best way to describe
this Mexican holiday is to say that it is a time
when Mexican families
remember their dead, and the continuity of life.
It is a holiday with a complex history whose observance varies
by region
and degree of urbanization. It is not a morbid occasion but a celebratory
one and a festive time.
Celebrants believe that the
souls of the dead
return and are all around them. Families remember the departed by telling
stories about them. The meals prepared
for these picnics are sumptuous,
usually featuring meat dishes in spicy sauces, chocolate beverages,
cookies, sugary confections in
a variety of animal or skull shapes, and a
special egg-batter bread ("pan de muerto," or bread of the dead).
Gravesites and family
altars are profusely decorated with flowers
(primarily large, bright flowers such as marigolds and chrysanthemums),
and adorned with
religious amulets and with offerings of food, cigarettes
and alcoholic beverages. This festive
interaction with both the living and the
dead is a way of recognizing the
cycle of life and death.

Upcoming Event
Here is an open letter from
Patty Fisher who once again
is spearheading a community
event:
I am writing you today to ask for
your support of the Health Fair
that Dr. Sandy Goldberg of NBC
and A Silver Lining Foundation are
in the process of putting together.
She has reached out to us for
help and chose George Washington
High School because of it's
statistics as the location for this
event. Here is the information:
DATE: Saturday, April 19, 2008
TIME: 10am until 2pm
LOCATION: 3535 E 114th St
Chicago, IL 60617
(773) 535-5725
We want to encompass all ages,
so we have to cover Prenatal to
Seniors. This too will include all
the community organizations that
are available in the area as well
as the City Agency's that are most
utilized in our community.
Dr. Goldberg has had a Health Fair
at Clemente High School and now
she has chosen our area to help
the underserved and forgotten.
We are growing by leaps & bounds,
which has caused overcrowding
in our schools and has a 93% Free
Lunch ratio at the surrounding
Elementary Schools.
This note is to ask for your
assistance and volunteers in
putting together our wish list. Since
this is dealing with all aspects of
life as well, we are starting to call
this a LIFE FAIR. Our intent is to
bring together Health, Education,
Work & Environment. They are all
intertwined.
So we are working on getting
Testing Van's for mammogram's
(Dr. Sandy), prostate cancer
(Dr. Sandy), hearing (Lion's?),
vision, blood test and any
other suggestions are welcome.
We are looking for Hair Stylists,
Barbers & Manicurists to build
self image.
Ask the Doctor (English & Spanish)?
Looking for speakers on different
medical conditions, teen age
pregnancy, birth defects & STD's,
job searches and workforce
development, managing money
and how to save for a home,
how to buy a home, City & State
assistance, Senior's Resources &
Options, Citizenship, Consumer
Services Assistance, LIHEAP
information, Environment & GREEN
Living, etc.
This is a balance of home and health.
Many people feel alone in their
illness or in their debt or in their
illiteracy and we want to show them
the steps or give them the key to
change their lives.
There is hope, there is a plan and
working together we can make a
difference in our own community
and in the world!
So please contact us in how we
can make this event a success and
show that there is a Silver Lining
for Everyone!
Sincerely,
Patty Fisher
