Mission
The mission of Knowledge Hook-Up® is to improve
computer literacy and offer internet access to the
underserved, low-income community of Southeast Chicago,
with the goal of bridging the digital divide, by offering free
online and onsite instruction in a fun and safe environment.

2008 Recent Accomplishments at KHU  

KHU donates the computer lab to South Chicago Parents &
Friends for weekly classes. This group supports persons
with developmental disabilities, enabling them to become
productive, valued members of society.

KHU worked with the Claretians and several local
environmental groups to help bring about the Green
Summit, which was held Saturday, May 31, 2008 in the
10th Ward.

Second year in a row, Ms. Fisher received the Presidents
Volunteer Award (2006 & 2007).

Three years in a row, Ms. Fisher has been Principal for a
Day at Gallistel School.

KHU and IBM have improved web-literacy at Gallistel
Elementary School. Gallistel received IBM's Reading
Companion web-based literacy program with KHU's
sponsorship. Children who use this software test
significantly higher on word recognition and comprehension
tasks. Gallistel's Principal McMahon is very excited that
his 2nd graders have an opportunity to use IBM's
innovative software thanks to Ms. Fisher and Robert Reed
of IBM Chicago.

Friday, September 19, 2008 KHU brought in the Life Source
Van for a Community Blood Drive, to increase the shortage
of donations in our community.

Saturday, September 27th, volunteers from KHU and Boy
Scout Troop 701, helped the East Side Chamber's
Clean-N-Green spruce up our business district.

Ongoing: Helping the Environmental Task Force bring
awareness to green space, reserves and marsh land
protection.

We are working with other organizations to bring another
Community Media Workshop to the neighborhood. We
hosted a workshop at KHU on July 22, 2008.

KHU is also going to be working with the State of Illinois as
an Access Site for Illinois WorkNet.
